How to recite

Anushtubh — four lines of eight syllables, printed here as two. The long first compound is one word; do not break it at the internal joins. Gauri and nārāyaṇi are vocatives and end in short i, not the long ī of the nominative gaurī / nārāyaṇī. Printed editions vary on this and many show the long form; the short vocative is the grammatical reading and the one used here.

Pronunciation key — sounds commonly got wrong

ट ठ ड ढ ण · ṭ ṭh ḍ ḍh ṇ: Retroflex — the tongue curls back and touches the roof of the mouth. Distinct from the dental त थ द ध न, where the tongue touches the teeth.
श ष स · ś ṣ s: Three different sounds: ś as in “shy”, ṣ retroflex and further back, s plain. Collapsing them changes words.
ः · ḥ (visarga): A soft outward breath echoing the preceding vowel — not a hard “ha”.
ं · ṃ (anusvara): Nasalises the vowel; the closing sound follows the consonant that comes next.
Long vs short vowels — a / ā, i / ī, u / ū: Vowel length is meaningful in Sanskrit. Hold the macron vowels roughly twice as long.
Aspirated consonants — kh, gh, ch, th, dh, ph, bh: A distinct puff of breath. ph is an aspirated p, never an English “f”.

Context

From the Narayani Stuti, the hymn the gods sing in the eleventh chapter after the Goddess has ended the war with the asuras. Every verse of that hymn closes on the same two words — nārāyaṇi namo 'stu te — and this is the one that left the chapter and became a mantra in its own right. The first compound is a superlative built by doubling: maṅgala, auspicious, and māṅgalya, that which consists of auspiciousness. Sarva-maṅgala-māṅgalye is therefore not "most auspicious" but something closer to "the auspiciousness in everything auspicious". Every word after the first line is a vocative — śive, śaraṇye, tryambake, gauri, nārāyaṇi. The verse is almost entirely a sequence of ways of addressing her, with only namo 'stu te left over to say anything. It is recited at the close of Durga puja and at the end of a Saptashati parayana.
