The twelve houses (Bhavas)

Twelve areas of life, counted from the ascendant. Signs are qualities of space; houses are the parts of a life those qualities land on.

A bhava is a house — one of twelve divisions of the chart, counted anticlockwise from the lagna. If signs are what kind of energy, houses are where in a life it shows up.

In whole-sign houses, the default this course teaches, the arithmetic could not be simpler: the rising sign is the whole of the 1st house, the next sign is the whole of the 2nd, and so on. No cusps, no unequal divisions.

The twelve

Note the pairs that sit opposite each other: 1 and 7 (self and other), 2 and 8 (what you hold and what you inherit), 4 and 10 (private life and public life), 5 and 11 (what you create and what you receive), 6 and 12 (the debts you service and the ones you release). The oppositions are not accidental, and reading a house together with its opposite is standard practice.

The groupings that do the real work

Individual house meanings matter less than these four categories:

Kendras (angles): 1, 4, 7, 10. Houses of strength and visible action. A graha in a kendra gets to act.
Trikonas (trines): 1, 5, 9. Houses of fortune and merit. Traditionally the most auspicious.
Dusthanas: 6, 8, 12. Houses of difficulty — illness, upheaval, loss. Placement here weakens a graha's ordinary significations, though it can strengthen ascetic and investigative ones.
Upachayas (growing houses): 3, 6, 10, 11. Houses that improve with time. A malefic here is traditionally welcome, because struggle in these areas tends to convert into capability.

The 1st house is both a kendra and a trikona, which is part of why the lagna and its lord dominate a reading.

House lords

Every house is ruled by whichever graha rules the sign occupying it. That graha is the bhava lord, and most classical judgement is about lords rather than occupants: where the 7th lord sits says more about marriage than what happens to be sitting in the 7th.

This is also where a graha's functional nature comes from, which Lesson 5 flagged. Saturn is a natural malefic — but for a Taurus ascendant it rules the 9th and 10th, two of the best houses, and behaves very differently from Saturn for an Aries ascendant, where it rules the 10th and 11th.

Houses are counted, and counted again

One habit that separates beginners from readers: houses are counted from any reference point, not just the lagna. The 7th from the Moon, the 4th from Venus, the 10th from the 10th lord — all standard. When a text says "the 5th from the Moon", it means: start at the Moon's sign, call it 1, count five signs forward.

Get comfortable with that counting now. Lessons 17 to 22 assume it.

Practice

Draw twelve boxes and label them 1 to 12 with their significations from memory. Then mark which are kendras, which trikonas, which dusthanas and which upachayas — and notice which house belongs to two groups at once, and which belongs to both a difficult group and a growing one. That second overlap is the 6th house, and explaining to yourself why it is both is worth five minutes.
