The ascendant (Lagna)

The single most important point in a chart, and the one that needs your birth time. Everything counted as a house is counted from here.

The lagna is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth. In English it is the ascendant, and it is what the Greek word hōroskopos — "hour-marker" — originally meant.

Why it dominates everything

The Earth turns once a day, so the whole zodiac passes across the eastern horizon in roughly 24 hours. That works out at about one sign every two hours.

The lagna sets the first house. Every other house is counted from it. Change the lagna and you have not adjusted the chart — you have rebuilt it. The same planetary positions, read from a different ascendant, produce an entirely different set of house lords, a different set of yogas, and a different reading.

This is why two people born on the same day are not astrological twins, why a birth certificate time matters more than the date, and why Prashna exists as a whole branch for people whose time was never recorded.

What determines it

Three inputs, all essential:

1. Time, to the minute if possible. 2. Place — latitude and longitude. What is rising depends on where you stand. 3. Date, which fixes the Sun's position and therefore which signs rise when.

Latitude has an effect people rarely expect. Signs do not all take exactly two hours to rise. Near the equator the variation is mild; the further from it, the more the rising times distort, until above the polar circles some signs barely rise at all. India spans about 8° to 37° north, so the effect is real but moderate.

Lagna lord

The graha ruling the rising sign is the lagna lord (lagnesha), and it is the single most consulted planet in a chart. Its condition — which sign it sits in, which house, whether it is strong or afflicted — is treated as a summary of the person's overall footing.

A worked example. If Scorpio rises, Mars is the lagna lord, because Mars rules Scorpio. Suppose Mars sits in the 10th house. A classical reading would say the person's core identity is bound up with their work and public standing. Change the ascendant to Sagittarius and the lagna lord becomes Jupiter — same sky, completely different summary.

Lagna, Moon and Sun

Three reference points are used, and beginners conflate them constantly:

Lagna — the body, the physical self, the circumstances of life. The primary chart.
Chandra lagna (Moon sign) — the mind and emotional life. Charts are frequently read a second time from here, and transits are traditionally judged from the Moon.
Surya lagna (Sun sign) — the soul and vitality. Least used in Jyotish, and the only one Western newspaper columns use at all.

When a birth time is unknown, astrologers fall back to reading from the Moon, because the Moon's sign is stable across most of a day even though its nakshatra is not.

If you do not know your birth time

You are in large company. Options the tradition offers: read from the Moon sign instead; use Prashna for a specific question; or attempt birth-time rectification, which works backwards from known life events. Rectification is skilled work and, being unfalsifiable in practice, is also where a good deal of dubious practice lives. Treat confident rectification claims carefully.
