Meaning

'Rama' as a name, and 'Rama' again — I delight in Rama, who delights the mind. The thousand names are equal to that one: the name of Rama, O fair-faced one.

How to recite

Anushtubh. The play is entirely in the sound: rāma, rāme, ramaṇa and manorame are all worked from the root ram, 'to delight', and the verse is built to let you hear that. रमे is the first person — 'I delight' — and रामे is the locative, 'in Rama'. They differ only by the length of the first vowel. Getting that wrong turns the line into nonsense, so it is the one distinction to drill here.

Pronunciation key — sounds commonly got wrong

ट ठ ड ढ ण · ṭ ṭh ḍ ḍh ṇ: Retroflex — the tongue curls back and touches the roof of the mouth. Distinct from the dental त थ द ध न, where the tongue touches the teeth.
श ष स · ś ṣ s: Three different sounds: ś as in “shy”, ṣ retroflex and further back, s plain. Collapsing them changes words.
ः · ḥ (visarga): A soft outward breath echoing the preceding vowel — not a hard “ha”.
ं · ṃ (anusvara): Nasalises the vowel; the closing sound follows the consonant that comes next.
Long vs short vowels — a / ā, i / ī, u / ū: Vowel length is meaningful in Sanskrit. Hold the macron vowels roughly twice as long.
Aspirated consonants — kh, gh, ch, th, dh, ph, bh: A distinct puff of breath. ph is an aspirated p, never an English “f”.

Context

One of the most quoted verses in Hindu devotion, and one whose first pada is genuinely unstable across editions. The Sanskrit Wikisource copy of the Ramaraksha reads rāmanāmeti rāmeti. Printed recitation books far more often give śrī-rāma rāma rāmeti, and a third family of editions has rāma rāmeti rāmeti. The second half of the verse is identical everywhere. The verse also travels. It appears in the phalashruti of the Vishnu Sahasranama, and is commonly attributed to the Padma Purana as well. This record cites the Ramaraksha because that is the edition actually consulted; the record does not claim it is the verse's origin, and it may well not be. varānane — 'O fair-faced one' — is a vocative addressed to Parvati, which is what marks the verse as spoken by Shiva.
