Meaning

Om, salutation to you, Ganapati. You alone are the manifest reality. You alone are the maker. You alone are the sustainer. You alone are the dissolver. You alone are all this — truly Brahman. You are the Self itself, eternally.

How to recite

Prose, not verse. Recite it as seven short declarative statements with a clear stop at each danda; there is no metre to carry you. कर्ताऽसि, धर्ताऽsि and हर्ताऽसि are kartā + asi, dhartā + asi, hartā + asi, with the avagraha ऽ marking an elided initial a. Say kartāsi, not kartā asi. The three differ only in their first consonant — k, dh, h — and the whole force of the passage is in hearing that they are parallel.

ट ठ ड ढ ण · ṭ ṭh ḍ ḍh ṇ: Retroflex — the tongue curls back and touches the roof of the mouth. Distinct from the dental त थ द ध न, where the tongue touches the teeth.
श ष स · ś ṣ s: Three different sounds: ś as in “shy”, ṣ retroflex and further back, s plain. Collapsing them changes words.
ः · ḥ (visarga): A soft outward breath echoing the preceding vowel — not a hard “ha”.
ं · ṃ (anusvara): Nasalises the vowel; the closing sound follows the consonant that comes next.
Long vs short vowels — a / ā, i / ī, u / ū: Vowel length is meaningful in Sanskrit. Hold the macron vowels roughly twice as long.

Context

The Ganapati Atharvashirsha is a late Upanishad of the Atharvan tradition, not a Vedic text in the Samhita sense, which is why it is classified here as pauranic under the taxonomy's rule for minor Upanishads of the Puranic period. What the opening does is unusual and is the reason the text matters. It takes the formula the older Upanishads reserve for Brahman — tattvamasi, 'you are that' — and addresses it to a named deity with a form, an elephant head and a mouse. The three functions of making, sustaining and dissolving, normally distributed across Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, are all assigned to Ganapati in three consecutive lines. This is a sectarian text making a deliberate and fully explicit claim, and reading it as gentle devotional praise misses what it is doing.
