Overview
[Panchang](/en/astrology/glossary/category/technique#panchanga) means "five limbs". It is the Indian almanac, and the five limbs are the five quantities it reports for each day:

Notice what those definitions have in common: all five are functions of just the Sun's and the Moon's positions. Nothing else enters. A panchang is, in computational terms, a table of two angles restated five ways — plus sunrise and sunset for the place.

History
The panchang is the direct descendant of Jyotish's original purpose. The Vedanga Jyotisha — the oldest surviving Indian astronomical text — is essentially a manual for constructing one: solstices, lunar months, intercalation and nakshatras, with no horoscopes anywhere in it.
The technical problem it solves is real and hard. A lunar month of about 29.5 days does not divide into a solar year of about 365.25 days, so a purely lunar calendar drifts against the seasons and a purely solar one loses the lunar festivals. Indian calendrics solves this with adhika masa, an intercalary month inserted roughly every 32 to 33 months, which keeps lunar festivals in their seasons.
Getting that right required centuries of accurate observation, and it is a substantial part of why Indian astronomy developed the precision it did.
Regional almanacs still differ, mainly on whether the month begins at the new or full Moon (amanta versus purnimanta) and on which ayanamsha is used — which is why festival dates occasionally differ by a day between states.
Why it matters
It is the part of Jyotish with a testable track record. A panchang predicts eclipse times, moonrise, tithi transitions and sunrise to the minute, and those predictions can be checked against the sky. When they are, they hold. This is the Siddhanta branch (see Three branches) doing exactly what it claims.
It governs the religious calendar. Ekadashi fasts, Purnima and Amavasya observances, Navratri, Diwali, Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi — all are fixed by tithi and nakshatra rather than by a solar date, which is why they move against the Gregorian calendar each year.
It underpins muhurta. Every electional judgement (see Muhurta) starts from panchang elements. The almanac is the input layer for the branch most people actually use.
It is the honest example. When someone defends astrology by pointing to the accuracy of eclipse prediction, the panchang is what they are pointing at. That accuracy is real — and it belongs to the calculation step, not the interpretation step.
Where it is used
Festival and fast observance — for a very large number of Indian households, the panchang is consulted more often than any other astrological artefact, usually without being thought of as astrology at all.
Muhurta — as the input to every electional decision.
Agriculture — sowing and harvest timing still follows almanac guidance in many regions, where it overlaps with genuine seasonal knowledge.
Temple administration — daily ritual schedules, festival calendars and abhisheka timings.
Naming — the Moon's nakshatra pada at birth supplies the traditional first syllable.
Daily panchangs are published by regional authorities, printed in newspapers, and now delivered by app to tens of millions of phones.
Strengths
Everything in it is checkable. Tithi, nakshatra, sunrise, eclipse times — all are computed quantities with right and wrong answers. You can verify a panchang against an independent ephemeris, and errors are findable. Almost nothing else in astrology has this property.
It solves a genuine calendrical problem. Reconciling lunar and solar cycles is not mysticism; it is arithmetic, and Indian calendrics does it well.
It has real cultural function. A shared almanac coordinates festivals, fasts and gatherings across a subcontinent without central authority.
It requires no belief. Using a panchang to know when Ekadashi falls commits you to nothing about planetary influence.
Limitations
The computation is sound; the auspiciousness is not. That the Moon is in Rohini today is a fact. That Rohini favours a particular activity is inherited convention, and no evidence supports it. The panchang's reliability on the first claim is regularly used to lend credibility to the second, and it should not be.
Regional almanacs disagree. Amanta versus purnimanta reckoning, differing ayanamshas and differing sunrise conventions mean two authorities can place the same festival on different days. Neither is wrong within its own scheme, which is a sign the scheme is a convention.
Rahu Kaal has no basis in the classical corpus comparable to the five limbs themselves, and its boundaries vary between sources — yet it is treated as precise.
Almanac guidance can become constraint. When a day is declared unsuitable, activity stops. Applied to medical care or urgent decisions, that is a cost, and the Muhurta page addresses it directly.
