Introduction to Astrology

Is astrology a science?
No. Its calculation step uses real astronomy, which is a science, but its interpretive claims have not survived controlled testing and are not falsifiable in the way scientific claims are. It is better described as a traditional interpretive practice with a mathematical component.
Why is my sign different in Indian astrology?
Western astrology anchors the zodiac to the March equinox; Indian astrology anchors it to the fixed stars. The two frames have drifted about 24 degrees apart because of the precession of the equinoxes, which moves most people back by roughly one sign.
Which system of astrology is the most accurate?
None has demonstrated predictive accuracy in controlled conditions, so the question cannot be answered on evidence. Practitioners of each tradition will tell you theirs, which is itself informative about how the question gets settled in practice.
Where should I start if I want to learn properly?
Pick one tradition and learn its mechanics before reading any interpretations. Mixing systems produces nonsense, because they use the same words for different things. The Kundli course on this site starts from zero for Indian astrology.

History of Astrology

How old is astrology really?
Sky-omen reading is attested in Mesopotamia from the second millennium BCE. The twelve-sign zodiac dates to around the fifth century BCE in Babylon, and the birth chart with houses and aspects to Hellenistic Egypt in the last few centuries BCE. Claims of five thousand years refer to nothing datable.
Did Indian astrology come from Greece?
Partly. The nakshatras and the calendrical material are indigenous and appear in the Vedas. The twelve signs, the twelve houses and aspects arrived through Hellenistic contact — the loanwords hora, kendra and trikona record it. India then added the dasha systems and divisional charts, which have no Greek parallel.
Why did astronomy and astrology separate?
Newtonian mechanics gave astronomy a working causal account of planetary motion and offered no mechanism by which planets could influence individual lives. Astrology kept the interpretation and lost its institutional standing over the following century.
Was the newspaper horoscope always around?
No. The Sun-sign column dates to August 1930, when R. H. Naylor wrote about the newborn Princess Margaret for the Sunday Express. It survives because one paragraph can address a twelfth of the readership, which is a publishing constraint rather than an astrological method.

Types of Astrology

Can I mix Vedic and Western astrology?
Not coherently. They use the same words for different objects — a Western aspect is a degree relationship, a Vedic one is a whole-house relationship — and they place most people in different signs. Learn one properly before comparing.
Which house system should I use?
Whichever your tradition uses, and only one at a time. Indian practice and the Hellenistic revival use whole sign; mainstream Western practice and KP use Placidus. The argument has run for centuries without resolution, which is itself informative.
Is numerology a type of astrology?
No. Numerology assigns meaning to numbers derived from names and dates and involves no sky observation at all. It is often practised alongside astrology, which is why the two get bundled, but they share no method.
What is the difference between natal and horary astrology?
Natal casts a chart for a birth and reads a whole life. Horary casts a chart for the moment a question is asked and answers only that question. Horary matters historically because most people's birth times were never recorded.

Indian (Vedic) Astrology

What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
Four things: Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac (about 24° from the tropical one), leans heavily on the 27 nakshatras, uses whole-sign houses, and has dasha time-systems that Western astrology lacks entirely. Most people's Sun sign differs between the two.
Is Vedic astrology actually in the Vedas?
The nakshatras are. The calendrical material of the Vedanga Jyotisha is. Birth charts, the twelve signs and the twelve houses are not — they arrived from the Hellenistic world in the early centuries CE, and the Sanskrit terms hora, kendra and trikona are Greek loanwords.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For a full reading, yes. The ascendant moves about one sign every two hours and sets the entire house structure, so a two-hour error rebuilds the chart. Without a time, astrologers read from the Moon sign or use a Prashna question-chart instead.
Where should I start learning Jyotish?
With the mechanics before any interpretation: signs, planets, nakshatras, ascendant and houses, in that order. The Kundli course on this site does exactly that and assumes no prior knowledge.

Nadi Astrology

How does Nadi astrology find my leaf?
By thumbprint — right thumb for men, left for women — which is said to narrow the search to a bundle. The reader then makes statements you confirm or deny until a leaf matches. That confirmation process is doing most of the work, because you are supplying the information.
Are the palm leaves really thousands of years old?
The leaves you would be shown cannot be. Palm leaf survives a few hundred years at most in Indian conditions, so any manuscript in use today is a copy. Practitioners generally accept this; it does mean the chain of transmission cannot be independently inspected.
Has a Nadi reading ever been verified?
There is no documented case of a leaf being shown to state someone's details before those details were disclosed in the session. Without that, the tradition rests on testimony from inside the consultation.

KP Astrology

Is KP astrology Vedic astrology?
It is Indian and it uses the sidereal zodiac, but it was created in the 1960s by K. S. Krishnamurti and uses the Western Placidus house system. Calling it ancient Vedic astrology is inaccurate.
Why 249 sub-divisions and not 243?
Twenty-seven nakshatras with nine sub-lords each gives 243. A sub-division that crosses a sign boundary is split at the cusp, and those splits bring the total to 249.
Can KP work without a birth time?
For horary, yes — the querent picks a number from 1 to 249 and the chart is built from that plus the moment of asking. For natal work KP needs a birth time accurate to the minute, because some sub-divisions are under a degree wide.

Lal Kitab

How old is Lal Kitab?
The five Urdu volumes were published between roughly 1939 and 1952 and are attributed to Pandit Roop Chand Joshi of Punjab. It is a twentieth-century tradition, though how much it compiles from earlier oral practice is debated.
Why are Lal Kitab remedies so cheap?
Its upay are household acts — feeding animals, donating food, floating or burying a small object — and several passages steer away from gemstones. That makes it structurally resistant to the conflict of interest that shapes commercial remedial astrology.
Does Lal Kitab use dashas and divisional charts?
No. It reads planets in fixed house positions and omits divisional charts, dasha systems and most of the classical Parashari apparatus. The volumes do not argue for that departure; they simply proceed on it.

Prashna Astrology

What is Prashna astrology used for?
One specific question, answered from a chart cast for the moment it is asked. Typical questions are short-horizon and practical: will a transaction complete, where is a lost object, is a journey advisable.
Do I need a birth time for Prashna?
No. The only inputs are the moment of asking and the place, which is why the branch exists — for most of history most people had no recorded birth time.
Why can't I ask the same question twice?
The tradition treats a repeated question as evidence the querent did not accept the answer. The practical effect, worth noticing, is that a reading cannot be re-run and compared — which is the condition under which a method cannot be corrected.

Muhurta

What is Rahu Kaal?
A roughly ninety-minute period each day, falling at a different time depending on the weekday, traditionally avoided for beginning anything new. Its exact bounds are computed from local sunrise and sunset, and regional panchangs differ slightly on them.
Is muhurta the oldest part of Indian astrology?
It is the closest to the discipline's original purpose. Jyotish began as a Vedanga concerned with fixing correct times for ritual, which is muhurta's problem — and the Vedanga Jyotisha is essentially a manual for it, centuries before birth charts reached India.
Should a surgery date be chosen by muhurta?
No. Medical timing is a clinical decision, and delaying a procedure for an auspicious window is where this practice stops being harmless. Choose the date your doctor advises.
Why are Indian wedding dates so concentrated?
Because auspicious dates are scarce and publicly known, demand clusters on them. That is a direct economic effect of muhurta: it inflates costs and overloads venues on a small number of days each season.

Panchang

What are the five limbs of the panchang?
Tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga (a derived period from the sum of solar and lunar longitudes) and karana (half a tithi). All five are functions of just the Sun's and Moon's positions.
Why do festival dates differ between Indian states?
Mainly because regional almanacs reckon the month differently — amanta begins it at the new Moon, purnimanta at the full Moon — and because they may use different ayanamsha values and sunrise conventions. Neither is wrong within its own scheme.
Is the panchang scientifically accurate?
Its computed quantities are — tithi transitions, sunrise, eclipse times can be checked against an independent ephemeris and they hold. What is not supported is the further claim that a given tithi or nakshatra favours a particular activity.
What is adhika masa?
An intercalary month inserted roughly every 32 to 33 months, which keeps lunar festivals from drifting out of their seasons. It is the Indian calendar's solution to the fact that lunar months do not divide evenly into a solar year.

Western Astrology

Why is my Western sign different from my Indian sign?
Western astrology anchors the zodiac to the March equinox; Indian astrology anchors it to the fixed stars. Precession has pulled the two frames about 24° apart, which moves most people back one sign in the Indian system.
Does Western astrology use Rahu and Ketu?
Not as primary significators. It uses Uranus, Neptune and Pluto instead, none of which were known before 1781. The lunar nodes do appear in some Western schools but carry nothing like the weight they have in Jyotish.
What happened to astrology when Pluto was reclassified?
Nothing. The 2006 IAU decision to call Pluto a dwarf planet left Western astrological practice unchanged — which shows the significator's meaning was never tied to the physical claim about what kind of object it is.
Is psychological astrology different from prediction?
Yes, and deliberately. Following Rudhyar and Jung, it treats the chart as a map of personality and development rather than a forecast of events. That is a much weaker claim than classical prediction, and a more defensible one.

Chinese Astrology

Why is the Chinese zodiac cycle sixty years, not twelve?
Because it pairs twelve earthly branches with ten heavenly stems. Since 10 and 12 share a factor of 2, the pairing yields sixty combinations rather than 120 — so a full stem-and-branch cycle takes sixty years.
When does my animal year actually start?
At the lunar new year, which falls in late January or February, not on 1 January. Anyone born in that window belongs to the previous animal year, and a great deal of online material gets this wrong.
Does Chinese astrology use the planets?
Barely. Its machinery is a calendar of stems, branches and five elements rather than a map of planetary positions. That makes it a useful comparison case: it reaches confident conclusions by an entirely different route from Jyotish or Western astrology.
What was the fire-horse year in Japan?
1966 was a hinoeuma year, believed to produce daughters who would be difficult and unmarriageable. Japan's recorded birth rate fell sharply that year and rebounded afterwards — one of the clearest documented cases of an astrological belief changing real demographic behaviour.

Egyptian Astrology

Is the Egyptian zodiac with Nile, Anubis and Sekhmet ancient?
No. It is a twentieth-century popular invention. No ancient Egyptian text assigns birth-personalities to a twelve-fold cycle of deity names. The deities are authentic; the astrology attached to them is not.
What about the Dendera zodiac — isn't that proof?
It is evidence of the opposite. The Dendera ceiling dates to the Ptolemaic period, around the first century BCE, and depicts the twelve Babylonian-Greek signs. It shows the zodiac arriving in Egypt, not originating there.
So what did Egypt actually contribute to astrology?
A great deal. The decans — thirty-six 10° divisions derived from star risings — which survive in Jyotish as dreshkana. Star clocks, which fed into the 24-hour day. And Hellenistic Alexandria, where horoscopic astrology itself was assembled.
Can I learn Egyptian astrology?
There is no body of technique to learn. The invented zodiac has no literature, no lineage and no practitioners in the sense that Jyotish or Ba Zi do. The real Egyptian material is studied within the history of astronomy and inside other astrological traditions.

Tibetan Astrology

Why does Tibetan astrology have two systems?
Because it inherited from two directions. The Chinese elemental material — animals, five elements, sixty-year cycle — arrived first; the Indian planetary material came with the Kalachakra Tantra's translation in the eleventh century. The two were never merged, and Tibetan sources generally do not treat that as a problem.
What are the mewa and parkha?
Devices particular to the elemental system. The nine mewa are numbers arranged in a magic square; the eight parkha are trigrams. Both are combined with birth year and element in personal and annual readings.
Is Tibetan astrology part of Tibetan medicine?
They are taught together — the Men-Tsee-Khang in Dharamsala trains in both — and astrological timing informs when some practices are undertaken. Constitutional assessment by a trained physician is one thing; letting an auspicious day decide when to seek care is not something this site supports.

Numerology

Is numerology part of astrology?
No. Astrology reads positions in the sky; numerology reads numbers from names and dates and involves no observation at all. They are often practised together, and Indian numerology assigns each digit to a graha, which is how the two get bundled.
What is the alphabet problem?
Name numerology assigns values to letters, but a name is sounds written in some script. आकाश has no Latin letters and so no Pythagorean value, and transliterating it as Akash, Aakash or Akaash gives three different numbers for one name. The value depends on spelling convention rather than on the person.
Did Pythagoras invent Pythagorean numerology?
No. The system taught under his name was assembled in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, largely by L. Dow Balliett and Juno Jordan. The attribution lends antiquity the content has not earned.
Should I change the spelling of my name?
The advice rests on the alphabet problem above — the recommended spelling only has a number because of the script it is written in. Legal name changes and re-registering documents cost real money for a reason that does not survive inspection.

Palmistry

Does the length of my life line predict how long I will live?
No. This is one of the few sharply testable claims in palmistry, it has been examined, and it does not hold. Palmar creases form from how the hand folds in the womb and change with use, age and weight.
Which hand should be read?
The tradition says one hand shows what you inherited and the other what you have made of it — but which is which varies between authorities and by handedness. That inconsistency is a rule added to absorb the fact that hands are not symmetrical, rather than a finding.
Is palmistry part of astrology?
No, though it borrows astrology's vocabulary — the mounts are named for planets and read like strong or weak grahas. In India it is often offered alongside Jyotish, which makes the pairing feel like one system.
Can a palm reading detect illness?
No, and a reading should never delay seeing a doctor. Hands do carry real signs a clinician looks for — nail changes, swelling, tremor — but finding those is clinical examination, which is a different activity from palmistry.

Face Reading

Can character be read from facial features?
No. The claim that fixed facial structure indicates character has been examined extensively and does not hold. People do read emotion and attention from faces accurately, but that is expression — dynamic and communicative — not structure.
Why does this page discuss racism?
Because physiognomy's main historical use, for roughly a century, was to argue that criminality and worth are readable from faces and therefore that some peoples are inferior. Lavater made it respectable and Lombroso applied it in courts. That is not a fringe misuse; it is the field's central use, and an honest account has to say so.
What about AI that reads faces?
Papers claiming to infer criminality or orientation from photographs have been repeatedly criticised for learning dataset artefacts — image source, posture, grooming, lighting — rather than anything about faces. Higher accuracy on a biased dataset is evidence about the dataset. It is physiognomy with a model attached.
Is Chinese mian xiang the same as European physiognomy?
Not in practice or purpose. Mian xiang as practised is descriptive and integrated with five-element thinking; it does not carry the ranking project European physiognomy was built for. Flattening the two together would be its own error — but neither has evidential support for reading character from structure.

Vastu

Is there anything real in Vastu?
Some of it, yes — and it is the only page on this site where that can be said. At Indian latitudes, keeping the north-east open, putting heavy mass in the south-west and leaving the centre as a courtyard are defensible on daylighting and ventilation grounds alone. That is climate-responsive building wisdom preserved inside a cosmological framework.
Does Vastu work in the southern hemisphere?
The daylighting reasoning inverts, because the sun is in the northern sky. Consultants nevertheless apply the same rules unchanged to houses in Australia or South Africa — which shows the framework is not actually tracking the sun angles it happens to overlap with in India.
Should I pay for Vastu correction?
Apply one test: does the person diagnosing the defect also sell the remedy? Mirrors, pyramids and metal strips are sold by the consultant who found the problem. Advice to move a kitchen or rebuild a wall is a large irreversible expense on an unevidenced basis.
Is Vastu the same as feng shui?
No, though they are often marketed together and both concern space rather than time. Vastu comes from Sanskrit architectural treatises and the Vastu Purusha Mandala; feng shui comes from Chinese five-element and directional thinking. They prescribe different things.
