Overview
Krishnamurti Paddhati — "Krishnamurti's method", usually KP — is a system of Indian astrology created by K. S. Krishnamurti (1908–1972) and published from the 1960s onward.
It departs from classical Parashari practice on four points, and all four are deliberate:
Sub-lords. Each nakshatra's 13°20′ is divided into nine unequal parts in the proportions of the Vimshottari dasha years. Across the zodiac this yields 249 sub-divisions — not 243, because a sub-division that straddles a sign boundary is split at the cusp. The sub-lord of a planet's position, rather than its sign or nakshatra lord, carries most of the interpretive weight.
Placidus [houses](/en/astrology/glossary/bhava). KP uses unequal Placidus cusps rather than whole-sign houses, which is a Western import and the most visible break with classical practice.
Its own [ayanamsha](/en/astrology/glossary/ayanamsha). The KP ayanamsha differs slightly from Lahiri, so KP charts differ from standard Vedic charts by a small but non-zero amount.
Ruling planets. The lords of the day, the ascendant sign and the Moon's sign and nakshatra at the moment of judgement are used as a live confirmation set.
History
KP is the youngest system on this page and the best documented in its origins, because its founder wrote it down himself.
Krishnamurti, from Tamil Nadu, published a series of Readers setting out the method, along with a magazine that carried worked examples. He presented KP explicitly as a correction to classical astrology — arguing that Parashari technique was too coarse to answer a specific question with a yes or no, and that the sub-lord gave the required resolution.
The system spread quickly in South India and now has a substantial following across the subcontinent, with its own journals, associations and teaching lineages. It is the strongest evidence available that Jyotish remains a developing tradition rather than a closed corpus — a point the History page makes more generally.
Why it matters
It is a natural experiment in astrology's own method. KP claims greater precision than Parashari astrology using the same planetary positions. Both systems are available, both have practitioners, and they frequently give different answers about the same chart. That is an unusually clean setup for comparing two interpretive frameworks — and the fact that no such comparison has settled the matter is itself informative.
It clarifies what "traditional" means. KP is barely sixty years old and is routinely described as Vedic astrology. Knowing its actual date makes the general claim of Vedic antiquity easier to assess when you meet it elsewhere.
It answers narrow questions. Where classical practice describes tendencies, KP is built to return a determinate yes or no. Practitioners regard that as its main advantage; sceptics regard it as its main exposure, since a determinate answer is easier to be wrong about.
Where it is used
Predominantly South India, especially Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with a wide following elsewhere in India and among the diaspora.
Its most distinctive use is horary by number: the querent picks a number from 1 to 249, which maps to a specific zodiacal sub-division, and a chart is erected from that plus the moment of asking. This removes the need for a birth time entirely, which is why KP horary is popular for one-off questions — a lost object, an examination result, whether a transaction will complete.
KP is also used for natal work, and for muhurta, though there it competes with well-established classical method.
Strengths
Higher resolution. 249 divisions is a finer grid than 12 signs or 27 nakshatras, and if a system is going to make specific claims it needs specific inputs.
Falsifiable in form. A yes/no answer with a date can be checked. Most astrological output cannot. Whatever KP's accuracy turns out to be, its format at least permits the question to be asked, which is more than most branches offer.
No birth time needed for horary. For the very many people whose birth time was never recorded, number-based horary is a practical route into a reading.
Documented origins. You can read what the founder actually wrote, in his own words, from his own decade. Almost no other astrological system offers that.
Limitations
It is not classical, despite how it is often presented. KP dates from the 1960s and uses a Western house system. Describing it as ancient Vedic astrology is inaccurate, and the inaccuracy matters when antiquity is offered as evidence.
The determinacy cuts both ways. A system that returns yes or no is easier to test — and there is no published body of controlled results showing it performs above chance. Its falsifiable form has not, so far, been used to establish that it works.
Sub-lord boundaries are extremely narrow. Some sub-divisions span well under a degree, which the Moon crosses in under two hours. That demands a birth time accurate to the minute for natal work, and most people do not have one. Small timing errors flip conclusions entirely.
Method-shopping. Because KP, Parashari and Jaimini coexist and disagree, a failed prediction can be attributed to using the wrong system. That flexibility protects all three from correction.
Number-choice is not a mechanism. The claim that a freely chosen number between 1 and 249 encodes the answer to the chooser's question has no proposed mechanism, and is the point at which even sympathetic readers of classical astrology tend to part company with KP.
