Om Hrim Krim Hum Hrim Kalabhairavadevaya Namah

This is the form the nāmāvalī itself uses: the four bījas and the name are stated, and then the hundred and eight epithets follow, with the invocation returning at each block of names. Reciting it on its own is therefore reciting the frame of the 108 rather than a separately composed mantra. Of the four seeds, hrīṃ is the one most written about; tantric literature standardly calls it the māyā-bīja. Bījas do not translate, and the gloss above says what the mantra is built from instead of inventing meanings for syllables. The nāmāvalī is worth reading for the epithets alone, several of which fix details this library records elsewhere: Kāladaṇḍadhṛt, holder of the staff of time; Kapālamālikābhūṣa, adorned with a garland of skulls; Kāśikāpuranāyaka, leader of the city of Kashi; and Kukkuṭārūḍha, mounted on a cock — a vāhana attested alongside the dog rather than instead of it.
