Transits (Gochara)
Where the planets are right now, read against where they were at birth. Transits are the second hand of the clock; dasha is the hour hand, and the two must agree.
Gochara means movement or going. A transit is simply a graha's current position, judged against the natal chart.
The crucial point, which separates Jyotish from most Western practice: transits are traditionally read from the natal Moon, not from the ascendant. When a text says "Saturn transiting the 4th", it usually means the 4th sign from the natal Moon.
How fast things move
Speed determines significance. A graha that changes sign every two days cannot mark a life chapter.

The slow three — Jupiter, Saturn, and the nodes — are what serious transit work uses. Fast transits describe mood and days, not chapters.
Sade Sati
The best-known transit condition, introduced in Lesson 18: Saturn passing through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the natal Moon, about seven and a half years in total.
Two related conditions use the same reference point:
- Kantaka Shani (also called Dhaiya) — Saturn transiting the 4th or 8th from the natal Moon, roughly two and a half years each.
- Saturn's transit of the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon is traditionally considered favourable — the upachaya houses again (Lesson 9).
Jupiter's transit
Jupiter is read as favourable transiting the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the natal Moon, and less so through the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th. Because Jupiter takes about a year per sign, this gives a rough twelve-year rhythm that many people can recognise in their own history.
Vedha — obstruction
A refinement most beginners skip and most popular sources omit entirely. In the classical gochara scheme, a favourable transit can be obstructed by another graha transiting a specific counterpart house, and an unfavourable one likewise cancelled.
The details vary by text and are not worth memorising early. What matters is knowing the concept exists — because a source that predicts from a single transit, with no mention of vedha, is using a simplified version of the system and should say so.
The rule that matters most
Transit and dasha must agree.
A transit describes a window of opportunity or pressure. Whether anything comes through that window depends on whether the natal chart promised it and whether the dasha is currently activating that promise.
The practical formulation used by most working astrologers:
- The natal chart says what is possible.
- The dasha says what is currently live.
- The transit says when, within that period, it is most likely to surface.
A spectacular transit over a dormant part of a chart, during an unrelated dasha, typically produces very little. This is why transit-only forecasting — the basis of every "Saturn enters Pisces: what it means for your sign" article — is the weakest form of astrological prediction even by the tradition's own standards. It uses one of three required inputs, and the one that is identical for everyone born under the same Moon sign.

Practice
Find out which sign Saturn is currently transiting, using any ephemeris. If you know your Moon sign, count how many signs Saturn is from it. Are you in Sade Sati, in Kantaka Shani, in a favourable upachaya transit, or none of these? Then answer the harder question in two sentences: given that everyone with your Moon sign has exactly the same answer, what would a genuinely personal reading need to add?
