Combustion (Asta)

A graha too close to the Sun is said to be burnt — invisible in the sky, and weakened in the chart. The orbs differ between texts, and Mercury is combust more often than not.

Asta means "set" — as in a star setting, becoming invisible. A graha within a certain distance of the Sun is astangata or combust: lost in the solar glare, and traditionally read as weakened.

The underlying observation is literal. A planet close to the Sun in longitude rises and sets with it, and cannot be seen. Jyotish, developed by people who watched the actual sky, treats invisibility as loss of power.

The orbs

These are the distances from the Sun within which a graha is considered combust. Texts differ, and the values below are the commonly cited set rather than a settled standard.

Two things follow immediately from the astronomy.

Mercury is combust very often. It never appears more than about 28° from the Sun as seen from Earth, so a 14° orb covers roughly half its possible range. A chart with combust Mercury is unremarkable, and reading it as a serious affliction every time will make you wrong more often than right.

Venus is combust reasonably often too, for the same reason — it never strays more than about 47° from the Sun.

Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can be anywhere relative to the Sun, so their combustion is genuinely occasional and carries more weight when it occurs.

What combustion is read as doing

The standard reading: the graha's significations are absorbed or overwhelmed by the Sun's — ego, authority, and the self. A combust Venus may indicate relationships subordinated to personal ambition. A combust Jupiter, counsel that goes unheard because the person prefers their own judgement.

Some authorities distinguish combustion from cazimi — a graha within a very small distance of the Sun, often given as under 1° or even 17 arcminutes. Cazimi is a Western Hellenistic concept where the planet sits "in the heart of the Sun" and is strengthened rather than burnt. It appears in some Indian sources through the same Hellenistic transmission described in Lesson 2, but it is not a mainstream Parashari category. Treat it as borrowed rather than core.

How much weight to give it

Less than beginners usually do. Three reasons:

1. The orbs are not agreed, so whether a given graha is combust can depend on which book you opened. 2. Mercury's near-permanent combustion means the condition cannot be as severe as its description suggests, or half of humanity would have no functioning intellect. 3. Combustion does not override house, dignity or dasha. A combust lagna lord in a kendra is still the lagna lord in a kendra.

The honest position is that combustion is a real and observable astronomical condition, that classical texts consistently treat it as weakening, and that the size of the effect is claimed with far more confidence than the disagreement over orbs can support.

Practice

Suppose the Sun is at Gemini 20° and Mercury at Gemini 8°. Is Mercury combust by the table above? Now suppose Mercury is retrograde — does the answer change? Finally, reason it out: given Mercury's maximum distance from the Sun is about 28°, roughly what fraction of all charts would you expect to have a combust Mercury, and what does that tell you about how much weight the condition can bear?
